Most people that are trying to learn how to take good pictures want to move too fast. If you really want to get good, you need to learn about the equipment first. Too many people skip this and then end up having to master Photoshop instead. If you learn the equipment well, you will spend less time fixing the picture later.
Below is a general breakdown of photography equipment basics. There are many articles on this subject all over the internet, so if you have been reading a lot or are not new to photography, this may be a quick review.
A Good Camera - If you are serious about perusing a hobby or profession in photography, you will need to invest in a good Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera. These cameras allow for total control over the shot. With them you can auto or manually control the aperture, shutter speed, and film (image sensor) sensitivity (ISO).
Lenses - Another good trait about the SLR is that many different lenses can be used with the same camera body. The basic lenses are the long lens, standard lens, wide angle lens, macro lens, and fisheye lens.
The long lens is used for long distance zooming; when you cannot get close enough to your subject to get a good shot, use this lens. This is a common lens with wildlife photographers.
The standard lens is the one that commonly comes with the SLR body. These are good for everyday use when you can get close to your subject. Their perspective is meant to be close to that of the human eye.
The wide angle lens is used when a perspective broader than the human eye is wanted, such as with a vast landscape. As the name insinuates it used a wider angle perspective to get more into the picture.
Micro lenses have a very short focal length that allows the used to get very close the subject and still focus on it. Some higher priced lenses will allow the user to touch the subject with the lens and still focus.
The fisheye lens has the broadest perspective but also tends to distort the picture. This can give interesting effects to the proper scene and is fun to experiment with.
Tripods - With many types of photography, the shutter has to be left open for a while, comparatively. While the shutter is open, any movement of the camera will cause blur or smearing of the picture. When this happens, it does not mean that you are a bad photographer; it just means that you need to use a tripod or some other stabilizing device. Many professional photographers use tripods. Those that do not, have spent a long time learning how to stabilize a camera with their body.
Be sure to use a tripod that is easy to set up if you have to more around a lot. Many wildlife photographers use a unipod to help them stabilize the camera, which is less cumbersome but also less stable than a tripod.
Filters - If you are shooting in different scenarios such as indoors and then outdoors, you will notice a huge difference in lighting. The natural lighting outdoors tends to be harsh around reflective surfaces such as flat rocks, metal, or water. A polarizing filter will help reduce the glare that comes from these reflections. A good ultra violet lens will also help reduce the appearance of blue haze in photos taken at higher altitudes were UV can be a problem. There are many other kinds of filters, but they would go beyond the scope of this article.
