Does your family celebrate their heritage by gathering for a family reunion? Isn't the best part of the reunion all that wonderful food? Grandma brought her Scottish Griddle Scones, aunt Mava brought her famous cabbage rolls, and do you have your eye on that strawberry pie?
This year why not do more then admire the food (and fill your plate). This year start a family project, create a photo book that everyone can be part of, share your family recipes and share your heritage. All it takes is a little advance preparation. When sending out the invitations to the reunion ask the reunion organizer to ask everyone to prepare their favorite recipe and to write the recipe out on a recipe card. At the reunion collect the cards and take a picture of each family member with the dish they have prepared. Contact those that could not make it to the reunion and ask them to participate by sending along a recipe and a picture. Perhaps you have some family recipes that have been handed down to you. If you have a picture of your great grandmother it is easy to have her picture scanned to digital format to include with her famous family recipe.
Once you have all of the materials gathered it is easy to use a photo book template to create your own family cookbook. Family photos and family recipes, and perhaps even a dedication page will make this a personal project that will be extraordinary. 8x8 is a great size for a project like this and the cost is very reasonable. Most photo book companies now offer this size in both hard and softcover. Companies like Shutterfly or Picaboo have user friendly tutorials that will guide you through the steps. If you are looking for inspiration to get started on your project check out some of the photo book galleries at some of these companies. They have lots of photo books to browse that will give you ideas on layout and styles. Once you are happy with your cookbook project you can upload it for printing and you can send a virtual copy to the rest of your family so that they can order their own cookbook.
Soon you will have a beautiful professional looking cookbook, recipes that are now saved for future generations, and most importantly pictures of those who provided the recipe. Each family member will have the joy of having contributed. Family accolades will come your way for creating the project, take a bow.
