I converted from PC to my Macbook Pro about four months ago. Since I do a lot of Internet marketing, I was a bit concerned about over-working the CPU on my Macbook. I was also quite concerned as to whether or not I would be able to do all of the work I was able to do on my PC. Would I find replacements for all of my programs?
One of the first things that I noticed - apart from just being able to open the box and go - was the fact that my Macbook was so quiet. I spent the first three days just installing all the programs I needed to do my business. I managed to replace pretty much everything - with the one exception being XSite Pro. Xsite absolutely rocks for creating high quality websites fast. So to make this program work, I installed Parallels 5. I run it in "coherent" mode and it is pretty much seamless with OS10.
The quietness of the Mac comes partially due to the low speed of the internal fan. The computer is a unibody frame that is all brushed metal. It acts quite nicely as a heat-sink. I did notice, however, that when I am rendering videos for upload to Youtube, the front of the keyboard near the bottom of the screen - gets pretty hot. I started doing some research on the issue.
I discovered a free utility called "SMC Fan Control" and installed it. I was blown away by the usefulness of this tool. My CPU went from 72 degrees (under a load) to 41 degrees under the same load! This is a 31 degree difference, which - in the computer business - is huge! The machine runs so much cooler and faster now. The utility has two settings; "regular" and "High Speed". I run it on regular at about 2,000 rpm when I am just cruising around. When I have Windows running in Parallels, as well as a few native Windows programs, along with Adobe Photoshop and MSWord all at the same time, I run it in "High Speed" mode. Most of the time, the temperature sits between 39 and 47 degrees.
The only other cool thing that I want to mention today is the boot options for Mac. If you hold down the numbers 6 and 4 while it is booting, it will boot into 64 bit mode. This handles memory a lot more efficiently. I find my computer runs faster and longer without me needing to flush the caches.
There so many things that Mac has done correctly, that I can barely scratch the surface here. I hope to report a lot more tips and tricks in the near future.
