I remember when I first started out write beats and songs. A lot of things seemed to be quite alien to me and go against what I had first thought. I found, In a way, a producer, beat maker or song writer is more of a magician rather the a musician down to the tricks they learn and show the audience. That audience has no idea how something was done but they like what they see/hear.
Here are a few things I think should be taken on board and added to what you know and be worked into your mindset and skill set.
A good collection of samples/drum sounds before you start - Before you start writing, make sure you have a good collection of drum samples to work with. By good I do not necessarily mean big. I mean a wide range of sounds & textures at different frequencies and not a collection of great bass drums; a couple of great snares & that is all. If you over look the whole picture of a loops ingredients you will end up with a boring, one dimensional, & flat loop. A loops drum beat needs to be like a sculpture before the production side of things start; the use of production is to shine not to cover.
* There are plenty of places online that offer free drum samples & some other sort of sample beats, some are awful, and some are good.
* You can get hold of old DVDs that came with magazines that are loaded with samples.
* You could even get yourself a half decent digital Dictaphone and make your own sounds! The possibilities are huge. You could even drum midi patterns on a trigger pad, even if you are a drum beginner. Get some drum notation books & get inspired.
* Go out and collect your arsenal. You can never ever have too many sounds.
Everything you need to have done, is sorted - It is no good starting to work on a loop on anything else involved in the creative process if there are things that you need to deal with or sort & they are nagging you. Enthusiasm is great and commitment is also but you want to work on your beats and music without the nagging reminder that you need to sort something out. It will affect everything. If it is a problem that needs to be solved and can be solved, do it before you start working otherwise it will land in your lap at the worst moment possible.
Average equipment at its best - When you start, do not go out and bankrupt yourself buying the latest gadget to prop up your self belief or to impress your friends. This is a sure fire way to create a huge amount of nagging problems along with the personal pressure to get results as you have spent X amount of money on a piece of gear.
That guy, in that flash car, you know the guy, right? Loud music & mean wheels. He cries like a baby when he opens his credit card statement & his car & lifestyle will be short lived. Do not fall into that trap that he feel into.
Start with what you need and do not bite of more than you can chew otherwise you will end up burying yourself in information. These things take time and I know it is a pain, but it is the only way. Everyone you admire knew this and they stuck at it & made it.
Last piece of advice would be: Seek a drum tutor to teach you how to play the drums, so you start drumming beats, drumming rhythms & drumming patterns for real before you start programming them; if you have the time and money.
There are many other things to consider & I believe that if anyone ever wanted to improve their loop making or song writing technique they should consider taking a look at THIS website. It could be the case that you are stuck and do not know what to do next or it could be you are wanting to learn more skills and 'tricks of the trade'; Either way, any extra knowledge is a plus.
