There are several camera brands out there you've seen over the years like Canon, Nikon, Olympus, and Sony. Each one of them are great options, but Leica is the best unknown version out there today. Oddly enough they've been around since 1913, but since they are a German based company they don't get the same type of publicity here in the states. There name was once Ernst Leitz GmbH, but now Leica has three different companies; Leica Camera AG, Leica Geosystems AG, and Leica Microsystems AG. When you look at the Leica Camera company you will find the D-Lux 4. The other companies offer geosurvey equipment and microscopes. The camera however will give you great point and shoot, rangefinder, SLR, DSLR, and even digital compact cameras and lenses.
You get 10.1 megapixels and 24-60mm lens, as well as F2.0. The body is quite small on this digital camera, and the 3.0 inch TFT LCD screen. The memory is quite small (only 50mb), but you will still be able to use memory cards if you need the added storage. If you want lavish casing the Leica comes in black, and it's extremely easy to use since the controls are on the top.
There are plenty of advantages revolving around sharpness, contrast, and color. When you look at professional cameras they these benefits definitely rival them. Oh, and did we mention it's extremely light weight? This way if you need to take it anywhere you won't have any hassles. You also won't have to worry about any accidental shots since the controls are setup to alleviate this issue. There is also a mode dial instead of a push button. Then of course if you need a little help along the way there are a few auto focus features that are extremely helpful.
You will also get additional benefits from barrel distortion with the lens. Just remember that the 24mm viewfinder isn't really considered the best quality, and the camera doesn't switch lenses. Even though they have set zoom lenses, you will still get high quality point and shoot option.
When you start using the camera you will notice it's perfect for parties, shorter shots, landscape and animals. If there is something moving you shouldn't have any problems taking a good picture. Now the overall cost of the Leica Camera D-Lux 4 is very similar to its competitors that offer the same types of features. In the end it's a great product and has several similar aspects to Nikon and Canon. Most predominantly the point and shoot variations.
If you need a few tips to help you get started, we have plenty for you. One of the best things to remember is the more knowledge you have around photography the more efficient and creative you will become. Take a class, but also make sure you have a high quality camera to go with it. Just remember to get as much help upfront as possible. The end result will allow you to look more like professional instead of an amateur.
Another great tip is to store your camera batteries separately. This will help you preserve their life longer. Also make sure you set your camera to dial mode whenever you're not using your camera.
