Although no longer manufactured, the 1980's disc camera, with its appealing and innovative design, entirely justifies its place in camera history. Furthermore, the limited life span of the disc camera, with its revolutionary circular film format, is an ideal collector's camera.
When Kodak introduced their range of disc cameras in 1982, they were not the first manufacturer to produce a camera using circular film. Circular film goes back at least as far as the Gray vest camera (c1886)... an all-metal, disc-shaped camera designed to be worn under a vest which took 6 exposures on an octagonal glass plate. About 1893 the Photoret watch camera was produced which took 6 exposures on round sheet film. More recently, in 1948, the Seikura Seiki Co. of Japan sold a Petal sub-miniature camera with 6 exposures on circular film, and in 1950 the American Safety Razor Corporation (New York) produced a small cast-metal camera taking 8 exposures on a 22x24mm disc film.
Disc cameras were introduced by Kodak in the USA in June 1982 with the Disc 4000, 6000 and 8000 models. At the same time an international model, the Kodak Disc 2000, was introduced but this was not available in the USA. All four models reached the UK market in September 1982.
Halina was the first non-Kodak company to get into disc. Other manufacturers added disc cameras to their product ranges over the following seven years, including many models specifically for consumers in continental Europe. At least 165 models were produced, with Kodak alone selling an estimated 25 million cameras worldwide.
Although disc cameras were relatively inexpensive, highly automated, lightweight and designed for ease of use, consumers failed to take to them in the way Kodak had hoped. There was widespread dissatisfaction amongst consumers over the lack of sharpness of the images caused by the scale of enlargement required from the tiny negatives. Reviews and comparative camera studies in photographic magazines also highlighted the unremarkable results from disc film. Images were often described as acceptable but never exceptional.
With sales falling, Kodak ceased camera production in 1988 and film production in 1998. No disc camera or disc film remains in production by any manufacturer today.
