Game Room Lighting
The more intensity involved in the game of table tennis, the more intensity is necessary for overhead lighting. A games room for the entire family to entertain themselves and play some gentle table tennis while waiting for supper will probably need less light than the area where a player and training partner are playing games and drilling with great effort.
You may even be able to get away with a single 100 Watt Light Bulb over the middle of the table for less illumination. For more illumination, you can install 3 rows of potent fluorescent lights right over the table, with one row in the center, and the other two rows designated somewhere around the end of the line of each table side. However, be cautious of flicker—some halogen and fluorescent lights may cause an effect of strobe lights on the ball in the midst of a rally, which can be a distraction.
There are several comparisons between halogen, LED, incandescent and fluorescent lights. Suffice to say that normally the brighter the light, the better; moreover, you will need improved lighting as the table tennis pace of play quickens. If you’re relatively handy, you can basically make a curtain that’s lightproof and removable for windows with a glare by installing dark plastic on a light doweling piece. Attaching a couple of hooks that are unobtrusive to hold the doweling on either side of the window can be considered. Naturally, curtains of good quality can solve the dilemma as well.
For lights placed in an awkward spot, you basically have to install extra lights to leave problem lights turned off, or attempt to designate the table to diminish the problem. This can be costly and look unusual. If your ceiling is low, a probable low-cost solution is to purchase a tall light stand with a head that’s flexible, which permits you to reflect lights off the ceiling that enhances the room light.
