Photography And Lighting
Photography lighting is often the difference between good and bad pictures. One of the greatest skills of a photographer is to be able to judge lighting conditions correctly.
Over exposure and under exposure are extremely common mistakes that people making while clicking away. The idea of lighting is to illuminate the subject of the photograph. There are plenty of tools that photographers use to get perfectlighting conditions.
Now there are two light sources that you can have for photography lighting – artificial or natural. It is completely up to the photographer to decide what kind of lighting source is to be used. Usually, outdoor pictures do not require natural sources of light. Studio pictures use a lot of artificial lighting. With natural lighting you have to consider using different angles. If you are using narrow angles, shadows will be prominent. Broad angles soften your picture and shadows are not very well defined.
Positioning of your light sources and the subject is another important factor. As such, light sources can also be classified by their position.
Key light in photography lighting is the central light source used to light up the subject and the background. Fill light is used to cover any shadows that may fall on the subject. The back light is the source placed behind the subject. Soft boxes and umbrellas are often added to light sources to help diffuse light and prevent extremely bright pictures. They are often used on artificial lighting sources. A well placed diffuser and back light can work wonders for your picture. Accordingly, you can adjust the placement depending on your requirement. Another important factor is the intensity of light. For indoor pictures you will require light sources with very high wattage. Outdoor pictures don’t really require high wattage light sources due to the presence of several natural light sources. It is important to make sure that your flash and your lighting sources work in synchrony.
Most photography lighting kits nowadays are compact and can be easily transported from place to place. Continuous lighting has become very popular amongst photographers in recent times. Here, fluorescent or halogen lighting stands are set up, and are left on throughout the photo session. This eliminates the need to constantly synchronize the camera’s flash with lighting sources. Once finished, the photographer simply packs these compact stands and carries them away to his next assignment. However, halogen lights consume a lot more electricity and generate a lot more heat as compared to fluorescent lights, so it is important to keep this in mind when picking a continuous light source.
