The 12.1 megapixels Cyber-shot DSC-W290 has a 5X optical-zoom Carl Zeiss lens, first at 28mm on the wide-angle end to 140mm on the telephoto end. It's a little bit thicker than any competing point-and-shoots, but? Still a pocket size camera and about 4 inches wide, 2.5 inches high, and an inch deep.
Like to all other model of Sony's compacts the Sony DSC-W290 is a great looking camera, and it is strongly made. It has made of sturdy aluminum body-case and this camera is available in black, blue or silver. On the other hand, the Sony DSC-W290 is not a mainly small or lightweight camera by modern ultra-compact standards. Its weight is substantially 164 grams together with the battery and memory cards, and the 97.6 x 56.6 x 22.6mm dimensions. The lens surround is ignored so in fact the camera is 26.5mm thick.
All in all the performance of the camera is Very good! Startup to first shot is a relatively quick 1.3 seconds. Shutter cover in good lighting in an average of 0.4 second; in a more complicated dim lighting, Shutter goes up to 0.7 second. Without flash it will cover an average of 2.3 seconds between shots is the waiting time, which only jumps up to 2.7 seconds with the flash on. Lastly, the Sony DSC-W290 turns in an extraordinary burst speed of 2.1 frames per second.
