Album Design 4 is a plug-in that allows users to create professional-looking albums within Photoshop, with minimal fuss. The set-up process for this software is a little unusual: you insert a CD and install Album Design 4 as you would any other program, but then you also need to insert a USB dongle in order to run it – not just the first time, but every time you want to do anything with it. This means if you're going to use it a lot, you'll have a USB port in use pretty much all the time.
The program's interface isn't integrated into Photoshop – instead you have to open it from its installed location, which calls up an external window. This window sits on top of all other windows that you have open, so you'll need to decrease the size of the canvas you're working on, or minimise the Album toolbar, which isn't entirely practical as you need access to it to work on your creation. It gets annoying if you're trying to work in another program at the same time, as it doesn't disappear when you navigate away from Photoshop.
Otherwise, everything's fairly straightforward. There's a toolbar at the top with a set of icons giving access to key functions, and down the left-hand side the program is split into eight major sections: Templates, Pictures, Effects, Masks, Styles, Objects, Backgrounds and Album Building.
The Templates section is open on startup, from which you can select one that suits your requirements. Alternatively, you can create your own custom template, setting the size, resolution and using the Marquee tool to select where you'd like your photo to appear. When you know your way around the interface, it's quite easy to use. The software can run a bit slowly on some machines, eg if your PC or Mac is near the bottom end of the system requirements, and the range of templates provided could be bigger. But this aside, the results generated by the software are both fast and of a good quality.
