Packing your items in preparation for moving them into a self storage unit in New York is not a task that needs to be daunting. With some early planning and forethought, however, your move into a New York self storage unit should be relatively care free. Here are some of the most useful packing tips that will allow you to save money, save time, and protect your possessions for some much needed and deserved peace of mind.
When packing for a self storage facility in New York, begin early for the best results:
In order to make sure that you are renting a climate control storage unit of the right size, it is recommended that you begin packing as soon as possible. You should use this extra time to sort through everything you want to store, separating it and organizing it so you can get a good feel for what you are up against. Before you begin packing, make sure you have thrown away anything and everything that you no longer want or need. Another step in this process of planning is to organize and inventory all of your packing supplies to make sure that you have everything you need in terms of packing supplies. You are going to want to make sure that you have the following, at least:
- Durable boxes,
- Packing tape,
- Markers,
- Bubble Wrap,
- A lock for your storage unit.
If you are missing any of these items, there is a good chance that the storage facility you choose will carry them, especially if they specialize in self storage instead of other types of storage like RV storage and vehicle storage.
Know how to pack for a self storage unit:
Now that you have your packing supplies gathered and you know what you need to pack, the next step is to get your boxes put together, your newspaper gathered, and you should begin priming your possessions for storing. Self storage facilities recommend that you do one room at a time so that you do not end up burning yourself out. At this point in time you should begin to prepare the following:
- You should disassemble anything that you can in order to save space.
- You should label every box with its date, where it came from, and what is inside of it.
- You should mark "Fragile" on the appropriate boxes.
- You should use bubble wrap or newspaper to wrap more fragile items.
- You should put Styrofoam packing peanuts in boxes before the breakables are inserted.
- You should place smaller boxes into larger ones to create fewer trips.
- You should tape small bits like nuts and bolts to whatever furniture they belong to, in order to keep your things better organized.
- Remove wheels and casters from everything in order to cut down on wasted space.
- Mark heavier boxes with their specific weights in order to avoid incurring injuries.
- Make sure that all of your boxes are completely sealed.
Moving your items to a self storage facility:
Now that you have completed the entire packing process, it is time for you to begin to move your belongings to the self storage locker or room that you chose. Moving your items into your new self storage unit is not a process that needs to be tricky. You are going to want to make sure that you fill your space safely. Keep the following tips in mind for safety and efficiency.
- Use two wheeled hand cars to do your moving in order to save your back.
- Avoid using plastic bags for storage. Plastic bags, like plastic garbage bags, can actually promote the growth of mildew and mold which can damage your valuables over time.
- Longer items should be stored vertically.
- Glass, mirrors and other fragile items should be stored between pillows or mattresses to protect them from breaking.
- Place heavier items on the bottom of each stack, and put the smaller and lighter items on the top of each stack.
- Place items that you will not need very often into the back of your unit, and put the items that you are much more likely to use in the front of your unit. Utilize the front area of your storage unit for objects that do not stack well because of odd shapes.
- Group similar items together, keeping items sorted room by room for easy access.
