Painting at Three Years Old
Animal portrait painting is, not unlike human portraiture except that animals rarely like to pose. It takes hard work for an artist to capture an animal's attention. This is the forte of a Wilmington artist. She is also a Delaware, which is a prominent family locally. Her grandfather is a painter who created a collection of sea and landscape paintings which became famous. By the time she was age 3, this female artist began to paint as well.
Animals became the most frequent subjects she liked to draw. It was at the age of 10 that she had her first show and at age 12 when she began making illustration for children's books. She learned all about the different types of dance with the help of dance teachers in Philadelphia. She did solo performances in dance for a long time and was even known for a very convincing death portrayal in one of her dances.
She makes portraits of various animals, though the dog remains her favorite. You would be fascinated watching her start a dog's portrait. She does as many sketches of the dog as she can while the owner keeps the dog still. The pencil seems to jump as she makes sketches on her sketchpad in an effort to find a pose that would best suit the dog. During all this time, she talks to the dog and praises him for his looks and behavior. She uses props of all shapes and sizes to maintain the animal's interest. She asks for the photographs that the owner might have of the dog and seeks permission from him to make copies for her collection. Next she collects three snips of hair, one each from the tail, ears and tummy, so that she can match colors. She labels the snips with the dog's name.
Afterwards, she concerns herself with the pose of the dog and the composition with a suitable background. The kind of dog or animal used in the shot will be the basis for the selection of the latter. She actually decided on sitting in a duck blind to make the sketches for the background of a Chesapeake Bay retriever portrait. She finds animals as well as people have their own opinions. One case that proves this is the American pointer who destroyed the worst painting of one artist who was sketching him.
It must have been a terrible painting if he had to get some form of medical treatment after showing his disapproval. For a portrait that either shows a beagle or a basset, she puts in a paw print to blend with the scenery and adds on the back the kennel club's identifying symbols. With the help of her own dog, she created abstract backgrounds. There is hardly any cooperation that can most of the time be expected by animals. Portrait painting stopped for the day when one model ran off with one of the female dogs. It may seem like a common thing, but odd and unexplainable things do happen when painting an animal's portrait.
