Does Tanning Lotion Really Offer Any Protection?
The general assumption is that anyone enjoying the sun for any length of time is probably slathered in tanning lotion and sunscreen. There are several schools of thought regarding the use and efficacy of both products. Are they necessary? Do they work? With more and more emphasis on protecting the skin against sun damage and skin cancer manufacturers have improved the quality of these topicals.
Today there are a variety of products formulated for specific skin types. It it important to use the appropriate product for your individual skin type. For optimum protection against the sun's rays while at the same time allowing for the best tan possible there are a few facts to keep in mind.
Darkening of the skin is achieved naturally by exposure to the sun. It can be enhanced by artificial means (tanning beds or lamps) or by the application of tanning lotion. Tanning lotion with sunscreen protects while permitting darkening without damage to the skin. But, not everyone has the same tolerance. So many product lines offer a range of formulas which range from very little to maximum protection. Matching product to skin type offers the best results.
To determine the degree of protection look at the SPF rating. Lower ratings mean less protection. A lower SPF may be appropriate for someone with a deep tan while people with fair skin may opt for a higher SPF initially. Making changes in the SPF as the tan develops over time allows one to tan while still guarding against damage.
Understanding when to apply and reapply the product is an important component of use. Someone sitting poolside doesn't have to reapply product. If, however, you are in and out of water it is important to remember to reapply skin protection each time.
There are products that do not easily wash off with emersion. Although expensive the added extra benefit is they protect the skin from sun rays reflecting off the water's surface. Skin type and recreation type dictate on which product offers the best protection. High quality tanning lotion and sunscreen for your particular skin type is worth the extra money you invest to safeguard your health.
