The LG GW520 is ideal for gadget lovers and texting fiends. Its low price is also attractive for users with tight budgets. However, is there more to it than its nifty keyboard?
Appearance:
At 125.5g, this isn't the lightest mobile on the market, but it's hardly a doorstop either. Its 2.8 inch TFT 262K colour screen is bright and vivid and responds well to touch. Its outer casing is also surprisingly sturdy, as is the keyboard--no plastic-y clicking here! In fact, the keyboard is incredibly comfortable to use, with its individually raised buttons. Users will also be pleased to know it comes in a variety of different colors as well. The user interface is where the phone stumbles, however. While it's not difficult to figure out, it's filled with enough glitches and freeze ups to create a serious distraction.
Camera:
The GW520's 3 megapixel camera doesn't pack much. With no flash and no autofocus, it's unlikely you'll be able to do much with this camera other than take the occasional quick snap. There is a camera key and digital zoom, however, and its photo editor is also a nice touch. There are a variety of video recording and playing capabilities as well. With this in mind, try to keep your photoblogging to well lit areas for the best results.
Sound:
Sound quality for the GW520 is crisp and clear, with no crackling or distortion. You also get a music player to play with, though little else, and this one only supports MP3 formats. You can also choose from a variety of MP3 and polyphonic ringtones. That aside, the music features are pretty minimal. No 3.5 mm headphone jack either.
Internet Connectivity:
While we lament the lack of Wi-Fi, you still get a variety of connection options to choose from, including 3G HSDPA, Bluetooth, EDGE, GPRS, and USB. Combine that with the instant messaging, MMS, and SMS available and you have a great phone for keeping in touch online and off. We get the impression that the target audience are those that want to text, email, chat, and use the internet heavily without lots of flashy extra features. Some users may even be able to get a lot out of its tiny camera and music. However, its tendency to freeze up or glitch may be a significant deal breaker for many users, especially those who are used to sending lightning fast texts and email.
