Scenic Backdrops in the Theatre
When you are acting out a scene that is meant to be outside using a scenic background is a great way to help bring the outdoor scenery into the theatre. There are endless amounts of designs you could do, but first of all you have to think about what your play actually needs. There’s no point having a backdrop of a forest if your play never goes near a forest is there? You need to think about what your play needs and what would go well.
Colors are very important here, as they will decide what type of atmosphere your play is depicted as. Lots of grey and black and people will start to assume the play is going to be dark and gloomy, lots of bright colors, and people will think it’s going to a be a fun and creative production.
You need to think about the actual image you want to have. If your play is set inside an abandoned house could you have a picture of the house and its surrounding area? Or maybe you want to have your backdrop as inside the actual house itself. Or maybe you want the house not even in view, but a mere speck on a horizon. The possibilities are endless and it’s down to you to decide what to do with them. If your production is set next to a lake, design a beautiful lake to put on your scenic backdrop.
Think about nature. Things like grass and flowers, all the way to wild cows and horses. Will they make an appearance in your backdrop at all? Could you use weather to enhance your scenic backdrop? Could you have a snowy background? Or perhaps a cold spring day with leaves scattered on the floor. The actual image possibilities are unlimited, and you can do anything you like.
Think about how your backdrop will appear in terms of contrast. When you are depicting weather in a backdrop it’s easy to get the colors a bit wrong, and make things brighter than they should be. When you are making your backdrop, make sure you take regular breaks to take a look at what you have done so far, and make sure you are happy with it. Get a second opinion. Is your cast happy with it? The sound engineers even the cleaners, get everyone’s opinion.
As you can see there is a lot to think about when building a scenic backdrop, but most importantly remember to make sure it is relevant to your production. Use any image you think will look well, test it out, if it doesn’t go well you can always just get rid of it. Do some research about your play; make sure you know what area it is being acted out in so you can apply the relevant backdrop. And finally make sure you don’t overcrowd it. Too little rather than too much is best, because you can always add more if you need to.
