Stage fright is something that you will be faced with if you want to perform live. For many it's a terrifying experience. Some very well known legends, of film and music, actually got physically sick before a performance. If you follow my 5 helpful tips and work them, you will discover how to overcome stage fright.
1. Constant Performance
Constant performance is the best antidote for stage fright. When I just started out in performance, I had little experience playing live. My manager, Frank Roberts, a well known sax player in Seattle, was a firm believer in constant performance. He always arranged for us to have "practice gigs" he would call them. It didn't matter where, but we constantly played 5 nights a week. And when we didn't have a practice gig, we'd play at a yacht club for some friends of his. Nothing can beat constant performance.
You may not have the opportunity to set yourself up like that, but go for every opportunity that you can. Go to open stages, join clubs. In town here we have a folk club, the "Black Walnut Folk Club." They meet monthly and have a performers circle where every one plays two songs. In my area, every town has a folk club and a monthly open stage. Many restaurants and bars have them too. There are lots of opportunities if you look.
2. Practice in Front of Family & Friends
I never had much luck with this one when I was starting out and then later I was always on the road. But for some people this works wonderfully and can be a great help! So, if your family is willing to give you some support, find a place where you can set up chairs and create a typical setting, as much as you can. Offer refreshments and make it as pleasant as you can. Your goal here is that they enjoy the experience and are happy to come again. (After all, that's what you hope to do with a real audience -- consider them a real audience!)
If you have access to a PA, use everything you would use at a real gig. Talk to your audience and relate a little story before you begin. It doesn't necessarily have to be about the song. Humor is dynamite. If you can have your audience chuckling here and there, they are bound to be having a good time.
3. Prepare, Prepare, Prepare
This is so true for me. If I'm well prepared, I feel confident and ready to roll. I would think that most people would feel like that. If you know that you're not ready, deep inside -- well you cannot hide that once you're on stage!
And a note about preparation. It usually takes much more than you think! You can whip stuff off in your basement with your friends and it seems good enough, but under the pressure of having an audience, it needs to be a couple of notches higher. Personally, I always feel that if people are paying to see me perform, the very least I can do is be well prepared.
4. Practice Performance
I'd like to say a few words here about how to practice your material. For myself, I always consider that there are stages of performance. When I first start working a song, one that I wrote and am still working it out, I usually sit and have a music stand. I play short sections that are more difficult and I perfect them to my satisfaction. I seldom play the entire song. At that stage, I consider it a waste of time.
The next stage is where I practice performance. Fortunately, I have a studio with PA and amps all set up, so it's easy for me to step into a stage setting. At this level, I seldom stop a song. You can't stop when you're performing. I imagine that an audience is there and I even practice talking to them and thinking of clever little things to say about each song. This step is so important. You must practice playing your songs all the way through, no matter what happens, or you'll never learn how to recover from mistakes. And believe me, knowing that you can recover from mistakes, is a very good antidote for stage fright!
5. Focus on Excitement vs Nervousness
Nervousness and excitement are two feelings that are very similar. I even think that people mix them up. When I was a child, we used to go camping once a year. It was quite a big deal for us. We'd stay there for three weeks and we loved it, my sister and I. Now it became part of the routine, that every time just as we'd prepare to go, my sister would first have to be sick! Sick to her stomach. Surely that wasn't nervousness, but excitement. She had absolutely nothing to be nervousness about and I know that she loved to go!
So, that said, I want you to consider that it's not nervousness at all, but excitement -- extreme excitement and start saying that to yourself. Start saying it to others too! Instead of saying "I'm nervous" say "I'm excited." You may not feel it right away, but I guarantee if you work it, you will feel much better about performing.
So those are my 5 tips on how to overcome stage fright. Excitement is good! Focus on the adrenaline that's pumping through you and use it to put energy into your performance. Knock 'em dead!
