Manchester United Past Players – Duncan Edwards
So often young players burst onto the scene, tipped to be the next best thing since sliced bread, but either fail to fulfil their early potential, or completely disappear as fast as they arrive. That is why most true experts are guarded with their praise, that is until such a talent as Duncan Edwards arrives. Born in 1936 in Dudley, West Midlands, he was destined for greatness from a very early age; causing quite a stir by joining Manchester United instead of his local Wolverhampton Wanderers.
He made his United debut against Cardiff City at the tender age of 16 years and 185 days, becoming the youngest player to appear in the top division. He quickly established himself in the side, putting in commanding performances week after week that belied his youth. His eye catching displays soon thrust him into the international spotlight and he made his first England appearance against Scotland just 2 years later – again the youngest until Michael Owen's emergence in the late 1990's.
Tragically, he was to lose his life aged just 21 as a result of the Munich air crash, when he sustained multiple leg fractures, and more crucially damaged kidney's. He astonished medical staff by fighting for 15 days and at one stage appeared to be winning his battle, but sadly the organ failed him. In less than 5 years, he won 2 League titles, made 177 appearances and scored 21 goals.
He won 18 caps, but, would surely have gone on to win over 100 more and it is widely recognised that if football hadn't been robbed of his talent it would have been him and not Bobby Moore who captained the side to glory in 1966. He had already become a key player in the England side's qualifying campaign for the World Cup of 1958 and would have been a focal point for the team at the finals in Sweden.
Such was his ability, Edwards was one of that very rare breed who could genuinely have played anywhere in the team. He took up a position of defensive midfielder, but had all the attributes for the attacking side of the game too. His immense strength and authority were what struck immediately, earning him the nicknames ‘The Tank' and ‘Big Dunc'; but make no mistake this boy could play as well as anybody. Supporters would flock to see not only a master-class of tackling, with perfect timing; but also a terrific range of passing – with both feet – and trademark surging runs. Indeed, he was one of those players who opposing supporters would happily applaud, such was the standard of his play. When talking about greats Duncan Edwards is right up there, not just for Manchester United, but with any names you'd care to mention.
