What are lay-flat wedding albums?
This articles tries to reduce the confusion that is out there regarding the question, what is the exact difference between lay-flat wedding albums and flush-mount wedding albums.
The term lay-flat wedding albums is often used synonymously for flush-mount wedding albums. This is not correct, because whereas flush-mount wedding albums are always lay-flat wedding albums, lay-flat wedding albums are not necessarily flush-mount wedding albums. The prefix „Lay-flat" is used for a variety of different wedding album types and wedding book types. It merely indicates that the pages of the album lay flat when opened. To achieve this, they are mounted usually on a stiff material like cardboard. Flush-mount wedding albums are constructed the same way. However, they have a couple of characteristics that can't be taken for granted with lay-flat wedding albums: they are usually printed on real photo paper and they are constructed with quality hard covers.
It is likely that the term "lay-flat wedding album" has become synonymous for "flush-mount wedding album", because it is more descriptive. "Flush-mount", even though technically correct (the photos are flush-mounted on cardboard), is an abstract term that tells little to people, whereas "lay-flat"" creates a mental image that corresponds perfectly to the appearance of flush mount wedding albums. Probably for that reason it is not uncommon to use both terms in combination: "flush-mount lay-flat wedding album".
